HELLO SPRING! // I’m yet to meet a person who d HELLO SPRING! //

I’m yet to meet a person who doesn’t LOVE Babylonstoren. Last night I got to experience Babylonstoren in Bloom at Hyde Park Corner — & it was such a beautiful way to welcome spring. 🌿🌸

If you have been to their amazing farm in Franschhoek, then you’ll appreciate the magic of the recreation of their famous Puff Adder walkway, with its winding shape, beautiful details &, of course, those gorgeous spring clivias.

Imagine that Babylonstoren feeling into the middle of Joburg — a little bit of garden, a little bit of design, lots of beautiful things to look at (& smell!) & plenty of temptation to take home. 😂

Basically, lots of things I didn’t know I needed until I saw them. 🙈

If you’re in Joburg, Babylonstoren in Bloom is at Hyde Park Corner from 1–14 September, 9:00-18:00 daily.

Definitely worth popping in for a little taste of spring! 🌸
And a perfect opportunity to start Xmas shopping.

Ps. Keep an eye out for the very unique , world first double Clivia that is on display!

TOO OLD TO START ? // Do you think that you ar TOO OLD TO START ? //

Do you think that you are too old to start or learn something new? Consider this little tale: Dr Edith Eger (a Holocaust survivor), was hesitant to go for her doctorate at the age of 40. She said: “It’s impossible because by the time I get a doctorate, I’ll be 50.” Her mentor replied: “You’ll be 50 anyway.” Dr Eger only passed away at the age of 98 when she was still working. So, she had over 40 years to practice as a Doctor of Psychology.

When I enrolled in chef school at 40, I was so nervous. Was I too old to be there? Would I be wasting my very hard earned cash? Coming from a desk job, I also wondered if I was I up for hours & hours on my feet? Did I still know how to study? How silly did I look in my super unflattering chef student uniform with no make-up, a hair net…?

Much to my surprise, I wasn’t the oldest student there. Two other ladies - both in their 60’s - also started this new journey when I did. If they were not too old, then I was certainly not too old.

The moral of the story: do you think you are too old to try, start or learn something new? The answer is NO. NEE. NOOIT.

It might not be easy (you can see how tired I am in these pictures, right?). You will still have doubts. It will push you to your limit, but that’s the magic.

We need to remind ourselves every single day that we are never too old to start.

Colonel Sanders was 40 years old when he first sold his southern-style chicken dishes & 65 years old when he started franchising the Kentucky Fried Chicken business after losing his original restaurant.

The iconic Iris Apfel was 84 when she had her first major fashion exhibition at MOMA in September 2005.

📌 Tell me: what do you still want to learn / start??🫶🏻

EATING TOGETHER // We grew up eating around our ki EATING TOGETHER // We grew up eating around our kitchen table at least twice a day. And on some Sundays we ate at the formal dining room table. These memories live forever in my heart.

Go on: invite someone, set the table, put away the phones & share a meal together.

“Eating together, breaking bread together, is one of the oldest and most fundamentally unifying of human experiences.” — Barbara Coloroso

How often do you ear together around the table?
GUAVAS // When last did you eat a guava? 🍈 If you GUAVAS // When last did you eat a guava? 🍈

If you can’t remember, then consider this your sign to put some in your shopping basket! 🇿🇦

Did you know that our South African guava farmers are really struggling with low consumer demand, difficult markets & challenging weather conditions right now? So, one very simple way we can help is by actually buying & eating more guavas! What can be easier? 🛒

And honestly… we’re missing out. Guavas are so delicious eaten just as they are — but they also go very well with:
chilli 🌶️, salt 🧂, lime, ginger 🫚, fresh mint, feta, prosciutto, cheese 🧀 , yoghurt or in a fruit salad or a salsa.

Plus, they’re packed with vitamin C, fibre & antioxidants.

So next time you’re at the shops, skip past your usual snacks & grab some guavas!

❤️🇿🇦 So are guavas becoming extinct? 🍈 Ummm nope - not on our watch.

Guavas need us. And honestly, we need them too. 🫶🏻

FOOD FOR THOUGHT // This is ons of my favourite FOOD FOR THOUGHT //

This is ons of my favourite quotes. It's taken from a Bon Appétit interview with Dennis Prescott. @dennistheprescott

"Food is one of the few things that we globally share—it doesn't matter where you come from, what language you speak—we all break the same bread together as a community.

The same way you reach another person with music, you can create this beautiful visceral moment at the table with the food or coffee you serve to people. These things, for me, center around community. It's why I fell in love with cooking.

This might sound cheesy, but in a Ted-Talk ‘What Is Your Why?’ sort of way, I want to inspire people to move from the couch to the kitchen. We fundamentally need more time together around the table, especially after this year. Great wine, great food, great coffee all do that. We are so much better for this time at the table.”

Tell me, what is your favourite food quote?

Just for giggles & fun. The main events of the evening ; the exchange of the crazy white elephant gifts & the incredible XMas food.
