I adore holly, mistletoe & the charm of a cold, white festive season. However, let’s be honest—December in South Africa is all about sunshine and serious heat! Traditional Northern Hemisphere holiday decorations simply don’t go with our summer celebrations. What truly complements our beautiful country is a festive table that showcases the natural beauty unique to South Africa.
When I saw the incredible African Farm range from Rialheim I was delighted. What could be more Mzansi than this? So, I decided to do an Ostrich inspired tablescape for you.
Here are some considerations for putting together a similar setting:
- The Palette: Neutral Tones with Vibrant Pops
Begin by grounding your table with earthy hues like terracotta and deep brown — colours reminiscent of Africa’s sprawling landscapes. I added accents in black and white patterns inspired by ostrich feathers and sprinkled in vibrant pops of bright green.

- Tableware: Patterns and Textures
I chose plain matt black cutlery from Nicolson Russell and white plates to keep the look sleek, but you can also go for plates and bowls that incorporate African-inspired designs like geometric patterns. I used Rialheim’s An African Farm Tablecloth Ostrich Tablecloth.

- Ostrich Accents as a Focal Point
An ostrich-inspired theme isn’t complete without nods to the iconic bird itself. I took a (new) feather duster & removed the ostrich feathers as part of the centrepiece. Ostrich eggs, real or faux, can also add some striking accents if you have these on hand. Use them as place card holders or integrate them into your table arrangement.
I also added the beautiful ostrich scatters (Ostrich Lovers Scatter Cushion and African Farm Ostrich Scatter Cushion) as part of the décor on the rest of the patio.

- Additional Elements
The feathers worked really well with some striking modern green flowers like the Green Ball™ Dianthus and the green arum lilies. Next time I might add some succulents, Spekboom or fynbos. Wooden or woven items, like small baskets or leather napkin rings, could also complement the ostrich-inspired look.

- Lighting: Warm and Inviting
Lighting plays a crucial role in creating ambiance. I used some unique glass candle holders (originally from Bloomspace) & various candles from Rialheim’s candle collection. These candles are individually made & have the most beautiful shapes.

Ready to style your table? Let the ostrich lead the way to a dining experience as vibrant & majestic as our African landscape itself.
